Overview

A hot rolled alloy steel bar order needs more than a grade name and nominal diameter. Specify the governing product standard and edition, exact grade, diameter, length and tolerances. State the delivery condition separately, such as an ordered heat-treatment condition, with the required hardness or mechanical properties and test basis. References to 40Cr, 42CrMo or 4140 do not establish cross-standard equivalence.

For machining or forging stock, describe the subsequent operation and finished-part requirements. Allow for machining stock, straightness, surface discontinuities and any decarburization limits where relevant. Specify whether the bar is required with its rolled surface or with additional surface preparation; include that work in the quotation scope. Agree heat traceability, sampling, inspection documents, packing and destination. Final suitability for shafts, fasteners or loaded parts depends on the approved grade, condition and part design.

Product scope

  • Exact alloy grade, product standard and edition
  • Diameter, length, tolerances and machining allowance

Applications

  • Machining stock for specified parts
  • Forging stock after grade and condition review
  • Shaft or fastener components under an approved design

Surface options

  • Rolled surface or requested surface preparation
  • Surface discontinuity and decarburization acceptance

Processing & form

  • Cut lengths and machining allowance
  • Required heat-treatment condition and test basis
  • Straightness and end preparation requirements

Packing, inspection & delivery documents

Include packing, material certificate and inspection requirements so costs and delivery arrangements can be reviewed together.

Packing & delivery

Export packing options

State bar lengths, bundle size, maximum package weight, lifting points and end protection. Specify corrosion protection, separation and heat identification where required. Agree packing and transport terms for the destination before comparing offers.

Quality assurance

Quality documents

Specify the material certificate, heat traceability and inspection plan. Agree chemical and mechanical test requirements, dimensional checks and surface acceptance under the ordered standard. Define ultrasonic testing method, coverage and acceptance level only where required; agree third-party witness or hold points before order acceptance.

Application requirements

Specify end use, environment and processing requirements so the material can be reviewed against your project. Machining stock for specified parts; Forging stock after grade and condition review; Shaft or fastener components under an approved design

FAQ

FAQ

Does hot rolled mean quenched and tempered?

No. Hot rolled describes the forming route. Specify the required delivery or heat-treatment condition, properties and test basis separately; do not assume quenched-and-tempered supply from the product name.

What should a machining-stock RFQ add?

Include finished-part dimensions or a drawing, machining allowance, straightness, surface and any decarburization limits. Confirm the starting-bar size and condition against the subsequent process.

Can a grade from another standard be substituted?

Treat it as a separate technical proposal. Compare composition, mechanical properties, delivery condition, dimensions and testing against the governing specification. Similar grade names alone do not establish equivalence.

Is ultrasonic testing included automatically?

State the required test standard, coverage, acceptance level, reporting and witness points in the RFQ. The product name alone does not define an ultrasonic inspection scope; agree it in the order and inspection plan.
