Overview

This page is for plate and coil intended as feedstock for pipe manufacturing. Order the raw material against an agreed material specification and edition, exact grade and delivery condition. API 5L and ISO 3183 address finished line pipe; referring to them does not establish plate or coil conformity as a finished pipe. If the project targets a pipe grade such as X52, provide the pipe manufacturer's feedstock requirements instead of treating that grade alone as a complete plate or coil order.

State thickness, width, plate length or coil limits, tolerances, flatness or shape and edge condition. Identify the intended forming and welding route and any requirements for chemistry, carbon equivalent, mechanical properties, toughness, test direction or ultrasonic examination. Agree the sampling and acceptance criteria for the raw material separately from tests on the finished pipe. Send quantity by size, destination and inspection documents. Availability, processing, packing and delivery terms require confirmation against the complete inquiry; pressure, sour-service or low-temperature suitability requires the applicable project review.

Product scope

  • Raw-material acceptance and finished-pipe compliance are separate.
  • A target pipe grade alone does not define the feedstock specification.
  • Delivery condition and test requirements follow the approved purchase specification.

Applications

  • Plate feedstock for an approved welded-pipe manufacturing route
  • Coil feedstock reviewed for the intended pipe-making process
  • Project material sourcing against a pipe manufacturer's feedstock specification

Surface options

  • Specify surface discontinuity limits, scale condition and acceptance.
  • Agree edge preparation and any storage protection requirements.

Processing & form

  • Identify plate cutting or coil slitting requirements and tolerances.
  • Confirm the effect of subsequent forming and welding on the material specification.

Packing, inspection & delivery documents

Include packing, material certificate and inspection requirements so costs and delivery arrangements can be reviewed together.

Packing & delivery

Export packing options

State plate-stack or coil handling limits, lifting method, edge and moisture protection, identification and destination. Confirm the packing arrangement, loading limits and delivery terms in the quotation.

Quality assurance

Quality documents

Specify heat and plate or coil identification, sampling, test direction, required results and inspection document type. Agree any witness points or third-party inspection before ordering. Raw-material documents do not replace the finished-pipe tests and acceptance required by the project.

Export packing & loading evidence

Representative export packing and loading evidence. Final packing follows the approved order.

FAQ

FAQ

Does an API 5L reference certify plate or coil as line pipe?

No. API 5L and ISO 3183 address finished line pipe. Plate or coil needs its own accepted purchase specification; the finished pipe must satisfy its applicable manufacturing, testing and acceptance requirements.

Is X52 enough information to order feedstock?

No. Provide the pipe manufacturer's raw-material specification, exact grade, delivery condition, chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions and test requirements. A target pipe designation does not replace these requirements.

What changes between plate and coil inquiries?

Plate orders need cut length, flatness, squareness and stacking limits. Coil orders need inside diameter, outside diameter or mass limits, shape, edges and unwinding requirements. Specify the tolerances for the intended process.

Can raw-material documents establish pressure or sour-service suitability?

They are part of the evidence, but do not establish suitability alone. Confirm the project material requirements and finished-pipe qualification, tests and acceptance for the intended service.
