Overview
Order stainless bar by section, grade and delivery condition. Round bar needs diameter; square and hexagon bar need the applicable section or across-flats dimension. Include length, straightness and dimensional tolerances so the quotation reflects the machining allowance.
State the intended component and any heat-treatment or mechanical requirements. Cold-drawn, turned and ground surfaces are distinct order conditions to specify for review, rather than interchangeable finishes. For repeat machining work, provide the finished part drawing or the critical starting dimensions, including any tolerance on the bar ends. Separate requirements for surface defects from dimensional tolerances. Identify the inspection document and any mechanical tests needed for the component, and state whether heat or lot identification must remain on individual cut lengths after cutting.
