Overview

API 5L is a line-pipe product standard, not a steel grade. Specify its edition, exact grade, PSL1 or PSL2 and delivery condition. Identify the welded process permitted by the project, such as HFW or SAW with a longitudinal or helical seam. A general ERW, LSAW or SSAW description does not replace the ordered process designation and acceptance requirements.

Provide outside diameter, nominal wall, length, tolerances, ends and coating. Define weld inspection, hydrostatic testing, supplementary service requirements and traceability. A change of welding process or substitution with seamless pipe requires the purchaser’s technical approval. Confirm the proposed manufacturing route, inspection documents, quantity and delivery terms against the purchase specification.

FAQ

Is API 5L a grade designation?

API 5L identifies the line-pipe specification. The exact grade is a separate order item. State the edition, grade, PSL and delivery condition together; a reference to API 5L alone is incomplete for a comparable quotation.

Can different welded processes be exchanged?

Use the process and seam configuration allowed by the project specification. HFW and submerged-arc welding routes have different process and inspection requirements. Matching grade and size does not approve a change; obtain the purchaser’s technical approval before substitution.

Does PSL2 establish suitability for sour service?

PSL2 is a product specification level. It does not by itself establish suitability for sour service. Provide the service specification and any additional chemistry, hardness, toughness, HIC or SSC requirements, including test methods, sampling and acceptance criteria.

Which inspection documents belong in the order?

Specify the certificate type, heat and pipe identification, dimensional and mechanical results, and applicable hydrostatic and nondestructive examination records. Add coating records and witness points where required. Document availability and third-party involvement must be confirmed with the quotation.
