Specify a coating designation, not a surface appearance
Under EN 10346, Z140 and Z275 identify minimum total zinc coating masses of 140 and 275 g/m² respectively, subject to the standard’s sampling and acceptance rules. An offered Z80 designation needs its own stated standard and test basis; do not assume it is an EN 10346 class.
Z275, Z140 and Z80 may appear on galvanized-coil offers, but the code must be read under a stated standard and edition. Do not assume that every offered code is listed in your project standard. Ask the supplier to identify the governing coating table and acceptance method. A bright surface or matching spangle does not establish the ordered zinc mass.
Separate mass, thickness and grade
Write whether coating mass is reported as the total of both faces or by face, and specify the units. Confirm the sampling plan, average and individual-result requirements, and test method. Z275 and ASTM G90 are often compared; a unit conversion alone does not make their acceptance rules identical. A coating-thickness reading is not a substitute for an agreed coating-mass test.
The steel substrate remains a separate order field. State the grade, chemical and mechanical requirements, and governing standard. DX51D does not imply a particular zinc class, and a zinc class does not establish structural strength. For roofing or formed parts, include the profile, bend radii, exposure and storage conditions. Coating choice should follow the project specification rather than an assumed service-life promise.
Include these fields in the RFQ
- Product standard and edition; steel grade and zinc-coating designation.
- Total or per-face mass requirement, units, sampling and test method.
- Base-metal or total coated thickness, width, tolerances and edge condition.
- Surface treatment, forming operation and environmental exposure.
- Coil ID, maximum unit weight, quantity and destination port.
- Packing, required delivery date, EN 10204 3.1 certificate when specified and inspection scope.
Check the coating record before acceptance
Match the coil identification, markings and agreed certificate. Confirm that the coating result uses the same units, sampling and acceptance basis as the purchase order. Agree how moisture protection, edge guards, packing orientation and loading records will be checked. If a lighter coating or another standard is offered, review it as a separate alternative; appearance and steel thickness do not approve the substitution.
