The buyer problem

Importers often receive two quote paths for low-carbon coil:

  • 1020 (AISI / SAE low-carbon class)
  • DC01 (EN 10130 commercial cold-forming quality)

Sales teams sometimes treat them as interchangeable. Process engineers usually do not—unless chemistry, hardness, surface, and forming severity are checked against the part.

When an equivalent is reasonable

An equivalent path is often workable when:

  1. Forming is light (blanking, simple bends, non-critical surface).
  2. Chemistry and mechanicals fall inside the process window.
  3. The buyer states “or agreed commercial equivalent” in the PO.
  4. Surface, oiling, and hardness bands are written down—not assumed.

Deep drawing, exposed appliance panels, or tight flatness/surface specs need a tighter designation and sample approval.

RFQ fields that prevent wrong-grade offers

For either 1020 carbon steel coil or DC01 carbon steel coil, send:

  1. Thickness × width and tolerance
  2. Surface (oiled, chromated, dry) and hardness if critical
  3. Coil ID/OD or max coil weight
  4. Quantity and destination port
  5. End use / forming severity
  6. MTC and inspection requirements

Document and packing notes

Export lots typically move with seaworthy coil packing, edge protection, and heat/batch identity on labels. When QA requires it, coordinate EN 10204 3.1 MTC and optional third-party inspection before loading—not after the vessel sails.

Practical recommendation

  • Spec already says DC01 / EN 10130 → quote DC01 path first.
  • Spec says AISI 1020 / SAE J403 class → quote 1020 path first.
  • Spec is loose commercial CR coil → state acceptable equivalents and forming severity, then align one offer line.

FAQ

Is 1020 the same as DC01?

No. 1020 is an AISI low-carbon chemistry class; DC01 is an EN commercial cold-forming designation. Many RFQs accept an agreed equivalent when chemistry and formability match the process, but they are not automatic substitutes.

Which one should I quote for light stamping?

Share forming severity first. Light blanking and general forming often work with 1020-class or DC01 commercial quality; deep drawing may need drawing-quality designations and tighter surface/hardness control.

What should I put in the RFQ for either grade?

Thickness × width, surface (oiled/chromated), coil weight or ID/OD limits, quantity, destination port, packing, and whether EN 10204 3.1 MTC is required.
